Gwinnett County to Begin DRIVES Integration resulting in Service Fees at DMV/Property Counters for Credit Card Transactions
Gwinnett County, GA, Sep. 18, 2025 – The Gwinnett County Tax Commissioner’s Office announces that beginning the week of October 1, 2025, service fees will be applied to transactions conducted at the county’s DMV/ Property Counters for credit card transactions. This change brings Gwinnett in line with other counties across Georgia that have long charged similar fees.
Mitchell in her commitment to instill trust in government through innovation, transparency and unparalleled tax and tag services, has decided to notify Gwinnett County of the changes in innovation and fees.
Historically, Gwinnett County has absorbed the service fees associated with credit card transactions as a benefit to its residents. However, due to the county’s rapidly growing population and the increasing cost of providing these services, continuing to cover these fees is no longer sustainable.
The new fees, which will be collected by Gwinnett in cooperation with the Department of Revenue (DOR), will implement DRIVES Integration at DMV and Property counters. This will offer several clear advantages:
- Streamlined Operations: Payments are automatically integrated into the DRIVES system, reducing manual data entry errors.
- Modern Payment Options: Allows contactless and digital wallet payments (e.g. Apple Pay, Google Pay. (payment security)
- Faster Checkout & Better Reconciliation: Cashiers benefit from more efficient workflows; reconciliation and reporting improvements.
- Enhanced Customer Experience: Modern technology and speed will enhance customer service experience.
- American Express will now be accepted as a payment option.
Gwinnett County Tax Commissioner Denise R. Mitchell indicated, “We’ve proudly provided these services without charging our residents for many years,” said Mitchell. “However, with the exponential growth in our county, absorbing the cost of convenience at this scale has become increasingly difficult. While I wish it wasn’t necessary, we must now follow the standards of the Department of Revenue to ensure we can continue providing exemplary service.”
What This Means for Gwinnett County
- Unified Payment Ecosystem: One provider for motor vehicle and property tax payments, fully synced with DRIVES.
- Modern, Flexible Payment Options: Ability to accept digital wallets and contactless methods, appealing to tech-savvy users. (ApplePay and GooglePay)
- Operational Efficiency: Less manual input, faster processing, more accurate data.
- Customer Convenience & Choice: Quicker processing, less time waiting in line.
- Improved Reporting & Reconciliation: Smoother back-end operations for the tax commissioner's office and county treasury staff.
